Lieutenant Commander Charles Courtland is a courageous hero of the British Royal Navy. After being terribly wounded in the great WWI Battle of Jutland he returns home a changed man.The psychological affects the war has had on him are destroying his family, especially his young son Brent. Brent grows up emotionally distant from his father. Always loving the sea, he too becomes a naval officer, and must go off to fight in WWII. As the captain of a submarine, Brent conducts Britain's most secret mission of the war, which hold for him a special horror.
My Thoughts: This is the first more military based pieces of fiction I have ever read, and it wasn't bad. I did find myself wanting to have more in the relations of the characters with others, but what I found this novel being was that of a love of purpose. The men in this novel do everything because of their love of the British Royal Navy and the love of the sea. I could easily see these characters in the world because I have lived in Navy towns my entire life.
This was a great way to relate more to the people of my community. Read It!
